(I've got a lot of projects on "to do" list.) And if it is possible more upgrades would really make it decent for simple home recording, maybe I can put off the custom build even longer. Maybe it makes sense to go for 1-2Tb?Ī follow up question might be, if anyone sees any other upgrades / modifications I might want to make on my laptop in the short run, apart from installing Windows 7, deleting bloatware, and adding external hard drive? Like adding RAM? Can/should I replace a USB 2.0 hub with a USB 3.0? Can/should I replace the internal 5400 rpm hard drive with a 7200 rpm hard drive? At some point, I think doing very much to it does not make sense, rather would seem better to do less and focus resources on future custom build, but I still want to get it good enough to start using DAW asap. I know 500Gb is plenty to back up my present media, but not sure when I get into recording if I'll need more than that. What I really want to know is what would be good, reasonably priced (under $100) external hard-drive that will work with my laptop and Reaper over USB 2.0 or the mini-FireWire, and will also work well later on over USB 3.0 with my planned custom PC. I plan to educate myself more and do custom build of dedicated recording PC, probably over the next year or so, and I would like the external drive to work well with that, too. I want an external drive that will be good for this, but will also be useful in the future over USB 3.0. (5) Use external drive for saving sessions, tracks, etc. (2) Replace Windows Vista with Windows 7 (I read recommendation to replace OS entirely rather than doing upgrade, so I'm planning to try that). (1) Back up my media files (need external drive for this, I think it would be slow & costly to do it all on cloud server, is maybe 150-200Gb) The laptop came with Windows Vista OS, but I've heard that sucks with DAW's (and just in general). I see myself probably using a 2i2 interface, maybe by Focusrite or Presonus, once I get the DAW on the laptop, in case that matters. I am trying to get my older laptop set up for Reaper to run well so I can do some home recording (guitarist, singer-songwriter). My question is mainly about external hard drives, but I think I need to give the bigger picture first.
